Sasso Poiano Mine (Caravate-Sangiano, Varese, northern Italy)

Opencast marl mine for the cement industry

In the “Sasso Poiano” mine, owned by Colacem S.p.A., a lower-Cretaceous marly limestone is exploited, officially classified as marl for the production of cement powder. The geological structure of the reserve is characterized by a tightly folded layering.
The mining method consists in pre-blasting 5 m-high benches, and subsequent removal of the material by means of heavy-duty excavators. The mine run is hauled by means of dumpers to a first crushing plant located by the mine, from where a conveyor system leads to the nearby cement plant.
