Aica-Mules Adit and Mules Access Gallery Galleria (Bolzano, I)

The Aica-Mules adit is part of the Brenner Basis Tunnel. With a length of 10.5 km it has an explorative function for the future Basis Tunnel. Between 2007 and 2012, the Aica-Mules adit had been excavated with a TBM double shield, while the Mules access tunnel had been excavated by traditional method.
The geological context is simple, being constituted by granitic rocks. However, due to the occurrence of several faults, strong water inflows had been detected along the excavation stretch. In correspondence to a fault the TBM got stuck for six months, implying the setup of an upgraded design of the segmental linings.
