Masjed Soleyman Dam (Iran)

Main station in cave e transformers camera

The Masjed Soleyman Dam (south-western Iran, province of Khuzestan) is a rock-fill structure with a vertical clay-core. It is 177 m-high and it has an installed power capacity of 2 GW. Since the construction of the underground power station main issues occurred such as the plasticization of the crown and of the sidewalls, that required the design of reinforcements works.
The hydroelectric plant is located in a geological monocline, characterized by a sequence of conglomerates, sandstones and shales with the last two terms affected by swelling phenomena. The analysis of the existing instrumental data allowed us to highlight the cyclical nature of the plasticization phenomena.
