Four-tracking of the Fortezza-Verona railway line
The Fortezza-Verona railway line constitutes the southern access to the Brenner Base Tunnel being part of the “Scandinavia-Mediterranean” Corridor within the TEN-T trans-European transport network. The quadrupling of the high-speed/high-capacity line will allow freight and passenger traffic flows to be separated and thus optimized, also thanks to a significant reduction in maximum gradients.
Lot 1 “Fortezza-Ponte Gardena” consists of two twin-bore tunnels (the 15 km long Scaleres Tunnel and the 6 km long Gardena Tunnel), connected by a viaduct of approximately 200 m crossing the Isarco Valley. Additional works include the construction of the Forch (1.3 km), Funes (0.7 km), and Chiusa (1.8 km) access tunnels, as well as the Ponte Gardena Interconnection Tunnels (BP 2.3 km; BD 3.1 km).
Excavation will be carried out predominantly by mechanized tunnelling methods (TBM-EPB), with a smaller portion executed using conventional drill-and-blast techniques.
